Assim Falou Santo Tomaz de Aquino

Thus Spoke St Thomas of Aquinas

A semelhana da criatura com Deus

The resemblance of creation to God

to imperfeita que no chega a ser

Is too imperfect for it to be arrived at

O gnero comum, comum

In the common genus.

Pois certos nomes que implicam relao de Deus

Since certain names that imply a relation to God

Com a criatura

With creation

Deles se predicam temporariamente

They themselves are predicated temporarily

E no so eternos, no so eternos e no so eternos

And they are not eternal, they are not eternal

Deve se saber que quem ensinou

You should know that someone taught (us).

Que a relao no uma realidade da natureza e sim da razo

That the relation is not a reality of nature and yes of reason

Esto enganados, puramente enganados

They are deceptions, purely deceptions

Esto errados, puramente errados

They are errors, purely errors

Deus no uma medida proporcionada ou medido

God is not a measured proportion or(even) a measure

Por isso no necessrio que esteja contido

For this is not necessary to be in this condition

No mesmo gnero da criatura

In the same genus of creation

No mesmo gnero da criatura

In the same genus of creation

Da criatura

Of creation

Por isso dobro os meus joelhos

For this doubles my knees

Diante do pai de nosso Senhor Jesus Cristo

The diamond of our Father, the Lord Jesus Christ

Do qual toda sua sbia paternidade

All of which his paternity would know

Tomou nome nos cus e na terra

His name taken in the skies and on the land

(falado)

(he said)

Senhor o tens tido feito o nosso refgio

Lord, you have made refuge for us

Senhor o tens tido feito nosso refgio

Lord, you have made refuge for us

As a committed atheist I must say, I find everything in the preceding song, repugnant. I don't believe in any God figure or a fairy tale story of his son, Jesus Christ coming to Earth to save us from our own sins. But, the incredible voice and melody of this great artist moves me to like the song, though its lyrics are anathemic to me. It's straight from the 2nd century Christian writer St. Thomas Aquinas, as he declares in each stanza. Aquinas did do much to set back the tide of scientific inquiry.

Well as a final statement, I make a mundane comment: we can like a thing for its beauty, but abhor its meaning.
