Construção

Construction

De: Chico Buarque

By: Chico Buarque

He loved in that time, like it was the last

He kissed his woman, like it was the last time

And every child was like his only one

And he went down the street, with his fearful step.

Subiu a construção como se fosse máquina

He went out to the construction site, it was like a machine.

Ergueu no patamar quatro paredes sólidas

Made in a base of four solid walls.

Tijolo com tijolo num desenho mágico

Brick on brick in a magic design

Seus olhos embotados de cimento e lágrima

His eyes embodied the cement and tears

Sentou pra descansar como se fosse sábado

He felt he wanted to rest like it was Saturday

He ate feijão with rice like he was a prince

He drank and cried like he was a glutton

Dançou e gargalhou como se ouvisse música

He danced and gargled while listening to music.

He stumbled into the sky, like he was a drunk.

And moved in the air like a bird.

And ended up on the ground like a soft package.

Agonizou no meio do passeio público

He agonized in the middle of a public sidewalk

Morreu na contramão atrapalhando o tráfego

He died in confusing wrong way traffic.

He loved in that time, like it was the last

He kissed his woman, like she was the only one

And every child was like his prodigy

And went down the street with his drunken step

Subiu a construção como se fosse sólido

He went out to the construction like it was solid

Ergueu no patamar quatro paredes mágicas

Made in a base of four magical walls

Tijolo com tijolo num desenho lógico

Brick on brick in a logical design

Seus olhos embotados de cimento e tráfego

His eyes embodied the cement and traffic

He felt he wanted to rest, like he was a prince

He ate feijão with rice like it was the best (meal)

Bebeu e soluçou como se fosse máquina

He drank and cried like he was a machine

He danced and gargled like he was the next one

And stumbled into the sky, as if listening to music

And moved in the air like it was Saturday.

And ended up on the ground like a scared package

Agonizou no meio do passeio náufrago

He agonized in the middle of a sidewalk orgy

Morreu na contramão atrapalhando o público

He died in a confusing wrong way public

Another song by Chico Buarque with an insight to the personal experience of a man of a different type

Pedro Pedreiro

Portuguese lyrics from Letras.terra

This site is an absolute must for anyone hoping to translate songs from Portuguese to English, without a Portuguese language keyboard or specific mapped-keyboard references in that language. Even with that, you have to relarn how to type and correcting your mistakes takes awhile. I tried it years ago and decide it wasn't worth the time it took to learn it. I'm sure there's somebody selling a Portuguese keyboard with the diacritical markings contained in the language.

For me to have written this song in Portuguese using the insertion symbol drop-down list available with the Windows operating system would have taken more hours than I wish to count. I thank the transliteration team at this site with all my heart.

Here we see Chico Buarque mixing a rhyming theme to portrait such a romantic idea of a man succumbing to his own destruction. He rearranges stanzas with the same adjectives used in odd positions that express the original idea in a convoluted form. I mean a machine doesn't cry or drink, but in the musical phantasmagoria of this song, it makes sense. It gives the listener a deep sense of a world losing its meaningfulness. It's existentialism put to verse. I love this song, and what it says is beyond belief.  When I play it, I feel as if I’m the doomed man unable to come to terms with himself.
